History

After Kansas voters approved pari-mutuel racing in 1986, The Woodlands opened in 1989 and drew 1.7 million people in 1990. Competition from Missouri riverboat casinos, approved in 1993, cut attendance below 400,000 by 2000, and the track went bankrupt in 1996.

The track closed effective August 24, 2008. Phil Ruffin bought it in 2015, put it up for sale in 2020, and the facility was demolished in March 2021 to make way for a planned Amazon fulfillment center.
