Lost venues by sport

Venues that hosted more than one sport appear under each of them.

Baseball

115
Former major- and minor-league ballparks, from wooden-grandstand parks of the early 1900s to the concrete multipurpose stadiums that replaced them. Many shaped the way the game was played, through quirky outfield dimensions, short porches and deep center fields that no longer exist.

Football

123
Professional and college football stadiums that are gone or no longer host the sport. The list includes open-air bowls, shared baseball-football stadiums and the domes built from the 1960s through the 1990s.

Basketball

65
Arenas that once hosted NBA, ABA and college basketball. Most were built as multi-use buildings shared with hockey, boxing, concerts and conventions, and most were replaced by larger arenas with more premium seating.

Hockey

50
Former NHL, WHA and minor-league hockey arenas. Several of the league's oldest buildings survived for more than half a century before being replaced.

Motorsports

57
Closed speedways, road courses, dirt tracks and drag strips. Racing facilities need large tracts of land, so many closed sites were redeveloped into housing, retail or logistics parks.

Horse racing

41
Thoroughbred and harness racetracks that have stopped racing. Their grandstands and large land parcels have often been redeveloped into neighborhoods, shopping centers and, in some cases, new stadiums.

Greyhound racing

29
Former greyhound racing tracks. Most closed as states banned or phased out live dog racing, and their large sites have since been redeveloped or left vacant.

Soccer

62
Former venues of professional and college soccer, including stadiums used by the original North American Soccer League.

Boxing & wrestling

54
Arenas and auditoriums known for prizefights and professional wrestling cards. Some survive in other uses while others are gone entirely.

Tennis

12
Former tennis stadiums and championship venues.

Olympic venues

12
Facilities built or used for Olympic Games held in the United States that have since been demolished or repurposed.

Track & field

10
Former track-and-field venues and stadiums that hosted major athletics meets.

Cycling

8
Velodromes and cycling tracks, including the board tracks that drew large crowds in the early twentieth century.

Other sports

4
Specialized venues such as ski jumps, rowing courses and multi-purpose grounds that do not fit a single category.
