History

The Brooklyn Jockey Club, controlled by Philip Dwyer, opened Gravesend on August 26, 1886. The Preakness Stakes was run there from 1894 into the 1900s, and the Brooklyn Handicap and Brooklyn Derby were founded there.

New York's 1908 Hart-Agnew law and its 1910 amendment ended racing, and the track never reopened. The land was sold to developers in 1920 and the track was demolished in 1922 for housing.

Why it matters: It hosted the Preakness Stakes from 1894 into the 1900s.
